The Halzephron Inn, Lizard, Cornwall

The Halzephron has an enviable local reputation for fine pub food. The menus are changed daily under the supervision of Head Chef Adam Carter and feature fresh local fish as well as meat sourced from local butcher J Retallack of St Keverne. The Halzephron was awarded the Good Pub Guide 'Cornwall Dining Pub of the Year' accolade in 2001 and 2005. Great food, fine ales and a warm welcome await you!

The Halzephron Inn is a five hundred year old free house situated on the cliffs above Gunwalloe fishing cove, four miles south of Helston on the west coast of the Lizard peninsula.

The Inn is three hundred yards from the South Cornwall footpath and is the only pub on the coastal path between Mullion and Porthleven.

The Inn was formerly known as 'The Ship', but in 1958 was renamed 'The Halzephron', the name being derived from Als Yfferin, old Cornish for 'Cliffs of Hell' as witness to the numerous wrecks along this coast.

The Inn commands superb sea views across Mounts bay, especially from the outside seating area at the front of the building. Delicious food prepared from fresh local produce enjoys an excellent local reputation and is available twice daily throughout the year, both in the bar areas and 'bistro' style restaurant.

A typical evening starter might be a tian of local crab with a new potato, cucumber and dill salsa or a duck and smoked chicken risotto with parmesan and herbs. The main courses will always include steaks  from renowned local butcher J Retallack. Other dishes will feature fish such as a pan-fried sea trout with asparagus, broad beans and peas, or perhaps a Halzephron chicken with char-grilled vegetables. The puddingsare extremely comforting, with Cornish Clotted Cream featuring in abundance!

There are always genuine vegetarian options available;  a vegetable, lemon and honey tajine for example. Specialist dietary needs can be catered for, Chef would appreciate twenty four hours notice if at all possible.

The Halzephron really does get busy at peak times, and booking a table in advance on 01326 240406 is recommended.

There is a good selection of fine ales kept in fine trim, including Betty Stogs from Skinners and Sharps Doombar as well as a fine local brew, Halzephron Gold, brewed specially for us.

The Inn has accommodation in the form of two cosy en-suite rooms  with countryside views. These are charged at £45 per person per night, inclusive of a full English breakfast.

The Halzephron Inn is a favourite of many, and the resident proprietor, local opera singer Angela Thomas, and her long serving staff assure you of a warm Cornish welcome!
